Since July of 2006, GAA has worked to create an art program for orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS in East Africa. Weekend art camps have been held each summer in Kenya and Tanzania. These camps combine the talents of both African and American artists to provide workshops in indigenous art practices, basic art drama, and music principals. Hundreds of children have participated in these camps and the artists also participate in order to share their own practices with the children. BLICK Art Materials, Speedball, Delphi Glass and Oak Park & River Forest High School have contributed thousands of dollars worth of art supplies to the camp and art program.
Each year, the children work with individual artists on a variety of visual art techniques, music and dance. The children are free to take their art projects home with them. There is also a group project, which remains with the art program. The groups have done a variety of murals, group quilts and participated in group performances. Vocational art techniques have also been taught.
GAA is working with faculty from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Art Therapy Program to establish full-time therapeutic arts programs in Kenya and Tanzania.
